Tsunami warning after magnitude 7.4 earthquake hits Alaska

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake has struck in the northern Pacific Ocean.

The quake was followed by several aftershocks, including a couple above magnitude 5.0. According to US Geological Survey, the major earthquake that hit Russia was originally recorded as 7.4 magnitude, but it has been upgraded to magnitude 7.8 magnitude on the richter scale.

The tremor was reportedly shallow and powerful enough to trigger a tsunami.

The quake struck at 11:34am on Tuesday (2334 GMT on Monday) some 125 miles (200 km) from the city of Nikol'skoye on Bering island off the Kamchatka Peninsula.

"Based on preliminary earthquake parameters. hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km (186 miles) of the earthquake epicenter", the center wrote in an official message.

This is the second strongest quake of 2017.

The authorities have asked the locals to stay away from the coastal best until more information is issued. The earthquake hit near the Komandorskiye Ostrova region of Russia.
